Job Description

The Proofreader’s job is to ensure the high quality of all deliverables before they are sent to the client, submitted, or deployed technically. He or she is a native English speaker, well-versed in the AMA editing style, and capable of ensuring that all written documents are free of typos and grammatical errors. A Proofreader may be expected to do everything from a simple clean read to extensive line editing, as well as checking for consistency with previously approved materials, revisions, or past submissions. The person in this role may also be asked to perform a side-by-side comparison to ensure that the technical builds are in line with the approved creative. The Proofreader must be comfortable with both digital (interactive) and print pieces, as well as electronic marking up. The Proofreader needs to have a sharp eye for detail, the ability to see errors quickly, the ability to prioritize tasks, and the confidence to work without direct supervision. Any issues or concerns he or she may have regarding a project should be directed to the editor, copywriter, or designer. It is imperative that the Proofreader set realistic daily priorities and inform the project managers of any impending deadlines.

  • Keep track of all the materials that have been edited or proofread.
  • Interact with staff, lawyers and management to understand work assignments and communicate any changes that need to be made to the documents.
  • Five plus years of proofreading experience, preferably in a law firm environment.
  • Read the original copy or drafts to identify and mark any grammatical, typographical, or compositional problems.
  • Papers need to be proofread to make sure they are error-free and presentable. Make corrections using the accepted proofreading symbol.
  • Investigate problems about spelling, punctuation, or word usage and make edits to original hard copy or electronic copy materials. Assist the department manager, if necessary, in developing style guidelines or writing guidelines for distribution to the department.
  • Utilize technology to efficiently complete proofreading/copyediting services like electronic work logs, IM, track changes for comments; ChangePro for electronic review.
  • Please return your corrected papers so that we may evaluate the differences.
  • Possess a high level of fluency in both written and verbal communication, as well as in organizational and interpersonal skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to multitask effectively.
  • Microsoft Office and Windows (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) expertise is a must, and web abilities are a bonus.
