The Forester will assist with a variety of forestry-related tasks and will directly contribute to the achievement of the Clean Water/Healthy Habitat Initiative, Strategic Climate Action Plan, Forest Plan, and Parks Open Space Plan objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Site plan reviewers from several disciplines (stormwater management, zoning, and transportation) collaborate to ensure that code requirements for other disciplines are met without interfering with the tree and landscape code.
  • Reviewing factors and making decisions on grant or denial of applications; notifying applicants in writing of reasons for denial in the event of a denial; assigning and taking part in inspections of site clearing activities in order to ensure that submitted landscaping, tree removal, and clearing plans are in compliance with municipal codes.
  • This profession encompasses all aspects of forest management and harvest monitoring on company- or privately-owned land.
  • Monitor forestland held by your local government and assist in the creation of forest management plans that will help you manage the land in the future. We collect and analyze data collected in the field as part of our work.. This helps us understand the structure of the forest, and we may use it as a guide. The Forest Landscape Assessment Tool (FLAT) should be used in conjunction with forest service personnel as well as contractors. Use it to check the condition of all previously purchased or newly purchased forestland parcels.
  • Verifies, establishes, and inventories the annual thin and harvest schedule, as well as road design and access rights of way, and any other tasks that may be required in connection with the sale and administration of the crop.
  • Assists and participates in municipal inspections of tree and landscaping installation. Makes sure that the quality, quantity, and type of plant materials used are acceptable; makes sure that the proper procedures for protecting existing and installing new plants are followed; and makes sure that provisions for maintenance and care of plant materials are in place.
  • Execution of the regional silviculture strategy and the yearly plan must be consistent with the silviculture plan. Silviculture contract negotiation, operation supervision (including timely status updates for system activity updates), and monitoring of contract performance (including safety and SFI and EMP), production costs, and product quality) are among the other duties assigned.
  • Other jobs may be allocated, such as those assigned at the beginning and middle of a rotation, contract administration, and other obligations.
  • In addition to reviewing and updating forestry-related websites, new outreach materials to support a variety of forestry activities are being developed.
  • Proper tree care procedures should be taught to other members of the Streets Division so that they can maintain the health and safety of the City’s tree stock.

Skills:

  • A high degree of knowledge is required in all parts of tree care, from planting to pruning to disease inspection and elimination. Tree management tactics must also be well understood.
  • The capacity to evaluate and identify pathological issues in plants; to determine the reparability of sick and physically damaged trees; to study landscaping designs and make good decisions regarding their acceptance or rejection; and; uphold laws and ordinances with diligence, tact, and fairness; Establish and manage successful forestry and landscaping inspection systems; educate staff in tree and landscaping inspections; work outdoors and need some physical endurance.
  • Capacity for establishing and maintaining excellent working connections with coworkers, departments, and the general public.
  • Urban forestry, arboriculture, or a comparable field from an accredited college or university, and six (6) months of experience in landscaping, forestry, nursery operations, or related work, as well as expertise conducting tree and landscape inspections.
  • In addition to strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Word), candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
