Job Description

The Veterinarian will be in charge of the animal collection’s health, including quarantine and medical operations. The veterinarian will also assist with the purchase and disposition of animals in the collection, as well as animal transportation and hand rearing techniques as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Provides animal husbandry, ethical animal handling, sanitation and disease prevention, basic animal behavior, medical care, surgical assistance (intake and discharge), and animal first aid training to employees; Assists in the proper training, evaluation, and execution of animal euthanasia via injection. Examines all seized animals and orders euthanasia for those who are sick or damaged.
  • All animals not already vaccinated against rabies are vaccinated when immunization is suitable, and all animals released from quarantine observation are confirmed as rabies-free. Provides information to animal bite victims, such as the steps they should take to ensure their safety.
  • To acquire AAALAC certification, the laboratory animal care and use program must be established and maintained.
  • Performs high-quality sterilizing surgery for adopted animal population management in a fast-paced shelter environment. Routine veterinarian care includes triage, physical exams, emergency medical care, stabilization, diagnosis, and treatment of sick and injured animals, minor surgery, vaccines, and testing.
  • Employees must be able to acquire animal data, enter dispositions into a computer, and generate monthly and weekly reports according to approved protocols.
  • Ability to obtain and control euthanasia drugs and equipment, as well as ensuring that supplies and equipment are used in accordance with all applicable state and federal rules and laws. Ability to stay abreast of current trends and developments in the animal sheltering business.
  • Successfully performs physical exams, diagnostic tests, and surgical and dental procedures. Clients are given information about their pets’ diagnoses, treatment plans, preventative health care, and dietary needs.
  • Maintains client/patient medical/surgical records and ensures that all relevant logs are kept current in accordance with protocols.
  • Clients supply valuable information, and he or she pays attention to and understands their worries and aspirations.
  • Creates and follows medical treatment procedures that are specific to each patient. Ability to interpret local animal control ordinances, legislation, rules & regulations, and city policies. Capacity to respond to public enquiries from citizens and city leaders; Assist in resolving issues in a timely and effective manner.

Skills:

  • You’ll need a federal DEA license and a controlled substance registration if you’re dealing with ultra-potent opioids.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), or comparable degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary medicine college or equivalent
  • It is necessary to have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment and complete assignments with little supervision.
  • Medical and/or other medical record keeping systems knowledge, including MedARKs and ZIMS.
